RMA Special Vehicles – South Africa – Mining Trucks, Ambulances, Security, Police Vehicles
RMA Automotive South Africa has set a new benchmark with a bespoke Ford Ranger mining vehicle conversion delivered to Rio Tinto’s Kennecott copper operation in Utah consisting of 6 fully customised Double Cab XLT – a project that demonstrates RMA Automotive South Africa’s global capability and attention to engineering detail.
Built to withstand the harshest working conditions, these Ford Ranger mining vehicle conversion models feature the most complex modifications we have undertaken to date.
Key safety and functional upgrades include a Spring Actuated Hydraulic Release (SAHR) emergency braking system with new rear drive shafts, brake hubs, a dedicated hydraulic pump and an in-cab control interface with an Emergency Stop button; an Ansul automatic fire suppression installation covering engine bay and underbody; and 12-layer Kevlar floor protection designed to resist steel bolts and debris.
The fitment of a custom Double Cab drop-side body improves payload access, while a dual battery system and ten high-intensity spotlights enhance underground visibility.
Beyond these major items, each Ford Ranger mining vehicle conversion unit received RMA Automotive South Africa’s comprehensive mining package: wrap-around bull bar, reflective tape and decals, seat covers, battery isolator switch, identification boards and all mandated accessories required for Class 3 light mine specification compliance. These elements combine to deliver safe, serviceable and compliant light work trucks suitable for rigorous operational routines.
RMA Automotive South Africa’s approach is engineered: designs are developed in-house, components are expertly sourced, and every modification is manufactured to meet OEM body-builder guidelines and mine house specifications. Our Silverton facility provides the manufacturing capacity and technical skill to execute complex programmes that preserve OEM warranties while adding life-saving adaptations for hazardous environments.
The benefits are immediate – enhanced operator safety, reduced downtime through on-site capability, and increased operational flexibility. For mining operators who must protect personnel and maintain continuous output, a purpose-built light work truck with integrated safety systems is a practical investment.
